Aphids are only part of the picture. The large raspberry aphid and small raspberry aphid between them carry several of the named UK viruses, but a leaf and bud mite spreads raspberry leaf blotch virus, soil-dwelling nematodes spread arabis mosaic virus, raspberry ringspot virus and strawberry latent ringspot virus, and several viruses also travel in pollen and seed. Tools and hands moving between infected and healthy canes can carry certain viruses too.
Our read Aphid control is worth doing, but treating it as the whole defence leaves the soil-borne and mite-borne routes wide open, which is exactly what an aphid-focused garden still gets caught out by.
What to do: Control aphids as one layer, not the whole strategy. Pair it with certified virus-free stock, weed control, and avoiding replanting on ground where a virus problem has already occurred, since those close off the nematode, mite, pollen and tool routes an aphid spray does nothing for.

There is no cure for a plant once a virus has infected it, and no chemical treatment exists for any plant virus. The advice for cutting losses on an infected planting is to remove whole plants showing symptoms, not to trim back the affected canes on an otherwise-kept plant.
Our read A raspberry plant's canes share one root system, so a virus present in one cane is a sign the plant is infected, not a problem confined to that cane. Removing only the visibly mottled growth leaves the infection in place and simply delays noticing the decline elsewhere on the same plant.
What to do: Once a plant is showing virus symptoms, remove and dispose of the whole plant rather than pruning out individual canes. Doing this as soon as yields start to fall protects the rest of the row from acting as a source aphids and other vectors can spread from.

Several of the named viruses in this group are spread by soil-dwelling nematodes, and those nematodes persist in the ground around old roots after the plants themselves have been removed. New canes planted into the same soil can pick up the infection again before they've had a chance to establish, even though every visible trace of the old planting is gone.
What to do: Where possible, replant cane fruit on a different part of the garden rather than back into ground that had a virus problem. If moving the row isn't an option, treat that as a reason to be extra strict about buying certified virus-free stock and watching new canes closely in the first couple of seasons.

Two independent sources, one UK and one US, lead their advice on raspberry virus diseases with the same single control: start with certified virus-free planting material. RHS calls starting virus-free the key defence, and UC IPM separately recommends purchasing only certified virus-free or virus-resistant nursery stock as a primary control for the same disease group in California caneberries.
What to do: Buy from a nursery that specifically certifies its raspberry stock as virus-free or virus-tested rather than assuming ordinary retail canes are clean. It won't guarantee permanent immunity since aphids and other vectors can still bring a virus in later, but it removes the risk of starting infected from day one, which is the single biggest lever available.
