In season
- Carrots Sow: February-March for early varieties under protection; April-July main season. Sow small batches regularly from early spring. · Harvest (estimated): Roughly Aug-Sep, estimated from the sowing window and a typical 12-16 week harvest time for your region, not an RHS-stated date.
- Kale Sow: March to June outdoors; indoors from March · Harvest: September onwards, through winter into spring
Everything else to do in October
- Plant garlic cloves, and autumn broad beans on sheltered, well-drained ground.
- Lift and store the last root crops, or leave hardy roots (parsnips, leeks) in the ground.
- Clear spent crops: compost healthy material, bin blighted or diseased foliage.
- Plant bare-root blackcurrants and gooseberries once dormant; raspberries from November.
- Net overwintering brassicas against pigeons and check pots for vine-weevil grubs.
- Spread compost or well-rotted manure over empty beds as a mulch; no digging needed.
- Insulate the greenhouse and check heaters; ventilate on milder days to deter grey mould.
- Lift dahlia tubers after the first frost blackens them; dry and store in frost-free place.
- Clean out water butts and gutters before winter. Debris blocks flow.
- Wash and store canes, stakes and supports so they are ready for spring.
