Excess nitrogen is specifically linked to greater brown rot vulnerability. UC IPM's guidance on brown rot blossom and twig blight states plainly that overfertilizing should be avoided because excess nitrogen makes shoots and flowers more susceptible to infection — soft, lush, nitrogen-fed growth is more easily colonised by the Monilinia fungus.
What to do: Feed stone and pome fruit trees moderately rather than generously, especially avoiding a heavy nitrogen feed right before blossom, since lush spring growth is exactly what brown rot infects most readily.

The wound route is real and is the one most home gardeners will actually see: bird pecking, codling moth damage and apple scab cracks are all named as common entry points, and closing them off with netting or pest control genuinely cuts new infections. But it isn't the only route. University of Illinois Extension notes it is possible for green, unwounded fruit to become infected directly, so an unmarked skin lowers the odds without removing them entirely.
Our read Treat wound prevention as the highest-value single step, since it's the route you can actually control, rather than as a guarantee that unblemished fruit is immune.
What to do: Net against birds, keep codling moth and scab under control, and still expect the occasional infection on fruit that looks undamaged, especially in a wet year.

This depends heavily on which fruit it is. For firm, low-moisture fruit like apples and pears, general food-safety guidance treats cutting away mould or rot as workable, provided a wide margin, at least an inch, is removed around and below the affected area, because mould and rot organisms don't travel far through dense flesh. Soft, high-moisture fruit is a different case: the same guidance is far more conservative for produce in that category, since fungal growth spreads more readily through it and can carry mycotoxins that aren't visible, tasted or smelled.
Our read Brown rot's own affected list spans both categories, apples and pears at the firm end, plums, damsons and cherries at the soft end, so the same salvage advice can't apply across the board. We're erring toward the conservative read for the soft-fruit group, since institutional food-safety guidance doesn't extend the cut-and-keep approach to them.
What to do: For apples and pears, cutting well away from the rot with a wide margin is reasonable. For plums, damsons and cherries, treat any rotted fruit as a whole loss rather than trimming and eating it.

This one holds up. The fungus survives the winter inside mummified fruit and in cankers on the bark, then releases spores the following spring that start the blossom wilt phase before going on to infect wounded fruit later in the season. Leaving mummies in place, whether hanging on the tree or on the ground beneath it, keeps that spore source available for next year.
What to do: Pick off and dispose of mummified fruit promptly, buried at least 30cm deep or via green waste collection, rather than leaving it on the tree or letting it sit under the canopy over winter.

This is a real effect, not a generic gardening platitude. An open canopy dries out faster after rain or dew, and brown rot needs damp conditions on the fruit and blossom surface to establish and spread, so less time spent wet genuinely lowers infection risk. Thinning fruit so mature fruits don't touch works on the same principle, since a rotting fruit can spread the disease directly to any other fruit it's in contact with.
What to do: Prune out infected spurs and blossom where practical, and open up crowded growth so the canopy dries quickly after rain, alongside thinning fruit clusters so fruits aren't touching as they mature.
