“Pear blister mite blistering is bad enough to ruin the pear crop”

The blisters are dramatic to look at, dark blotches covering a leaf edge to edge by late summer, but the mites live and feed inside the leaf tissue, not on the fruit. A tree can carry a heavy leaf infestation for years without a measurable drop in cropping, because photosynthesis loss from a badly blistered leaf still leaves the tree with enough working foliage to fruit normally in most gardens.

Our read The visual severity of the blistering is what drives this myth: gardeners see a leaf that looks diseased and assume the crop underneath is compromised too, when the two aren't linked for this pest.

What to do: Leave the tree alone and don't treat blistered leaves as a sign to intervene on the fruit; watch the pears themselves rather than the leaves if you're worried about the crop.

It depends entirely on how bad the infestation is. On a lightly affected tree, picking off the odd blistered leaf or shoot is a reasonable, low-cost response. On a heavily affected tree, stripping off most of the blistered foliage removes working leaf tissue the tree needs, and that photosynthesis loss can cost the tree more than the mite ever would.

What to do: Only remove individual blistered leaves on a lightly affected tree; if blisters cover most of the canopy, leave the foliage in place and don't strip it back.

“You need to spray pear trees with dormant/horticultural oil after leaf fall to control pear blister mite”

US extension services treat a timed oil spray as standard control: UC IPM states overwintering mites sit under the bud scales in October–November and are 'readily controlled with a fall spray' of narrow-range oil or lime sulphur once the tree is dormant. RHS guidance, aimed at UK home gardeners, takes the opposite position: it has 'little impact on the tree's health or ability to produce fruit and control is not necessary.'

What to do: In a Scottish garden, where blister mite rarely threatens the crop, RHS's line holds — leave it alone. Spraying is only worth considering on a heavily blistered tree you're not willing to tolerate, timed to dormancy per the US guidance, not applied on a whim in summer.
