“Pull off the orange-spotted leaves as soon as you see them to stop pear rust getting worse.”

Removing leaves from a heavily infected pear tree may do more harm than good. The leaf-stage growths don't reinfect the pear tree itself, they only go on to infect nearby juniper, so stripping leaves through the season costs the tree photosynthesis without stopping anything on the pear side.

What to do: Leave infected leaves in place on the tree through the growing season. If you want to interrupt the cycle, focus effort on the juniper host instead: prune out galls or remove the juniper where practical.

“Spraying a fungicide on your pear tree will stop or cure pear rust”

RHS states plainly that no fungicides with activity against rust are currently produced for home gardeners to use on pear trees whose fruit will be eaten, and more broadly advises against fungicide use because of the wider impact on biodiversity and soil health.

What to do: There's no spray-and-forget fix. Manage pear rust by controlling nearby junipers (the alternate host) and living with a level of leaf spotting most seasons.

Pear rust spores are airborne over quite long distances, so removing a nearby juniper reduces the likelihood of infection rather than eliminating it outright. A juniper two gardens away, or one on a neighbour's plot you have no control over, can still keep the cycle going even after you've dealt with your own.

Our read The two-host life cycle makes juniper removal sound like a clean fix, but it only closes off the source you can actually reach. Treat it as one worthwhile step among several rather than a guarantee.

What to do: Remove or relocate an ornamental juniper growing close to the pear tree where you can, and prune out any galls on a juniper you're keeping, but don't expect that alone to stop rust arriving from further afield.

General rust guidance draws a timing distinction rather than a blanket rule: leaves affected in spring and early summer can go in a normal home compost heap because those spores are short-lived and are killed off during composting, but leaves shed in late summer and autumn can carry tougher, overwintering spores and are better disposed of another way.

Our read For pear rust specifically, the leaf-stage spores don't reinfect the pear tree even if you leave them on the ground; they only go on to infect nearby juniper. So the composting question is really about not helping that later stage along, not about protecting the pear itself.
