The concern isn't the caterpillar itself so much as what it leaves behind. Once inside a pod it feeds and defecates among the peas, and general food-safety guidance for garden produce treats caterpillar feeding damage that has broken the skin of a fruit or vegetable as a discard-it case rather than a trim-it-and-eat-it one, because the breach creates a route for contamination that simple removal of the visible insect doesn't undo. That lines up with the practical advice for pea moth specifically, which is that shelling needs to be done carefully to avoid contamination, not that a quick pick-through makes an infested pod fine to use.

What to do: Treat any pod with a caterpillar or visible frass as compost material rather than food; don't try to salvage the peas around the damage. Undamaged pods from the same plant are unaffected and fine to eat.

What to do: Pick a quick-maturing cultivar and either sow it as early as the soil allows, or hold sowing back to mid-May, so flowering falls before or after June and July rather than in the middle of it.

For a garden plot the trap-count thresholds themselves are calibrated to commercial fields rather than a few rows of peas, but the underlying signal, a rising trap catch means moths are on the wing right now, is the same either way, and it turns "cover the plants in June just in case" into covering them once the moths have actually shown up.

Our read The specific numeric threshold (ten moths, two consecutive checks) comes from commercial crop-loss economics and isn't a garden-scale recommendation as such. Treat a trap mainly as a yes/no signal that moths are active in your area right now, not as a precise spray calendar for a handful of plants.

That makes these pea types a genuinely lower-risk choice, though it is a difference in exposure rather than an absolute guarantee, since a pod left on the plant to swell can still catch up to the vulnerable stage.

What to do: If pea moth is a recurring problem on your plot, growing mangetout or sugar snap and picking pods young and flat cuts the risk substantially; just don't leave pods to fatten up past the normal picking stage.
