The fly produces two to three generations across the growing season, not one. RHS describes three generations during summer, with the first in late spring to early summer often the most damaging because young transplants have the smallest root systems, but the second and third generations still lay eggs into autumn. AHDB records two to three generations in the south of the UK and two in the north, and Garden Organic likewise notes that a second and even third generation continues to damage plants into autumn. A crop put in during July or August still meets an active fly population.
Our read All three sources describe the same underlying biology from different angles (a UK-wide levy-board pest profile, a national gardening charity, and RHS's own dedicated page), and none of them frame cabbage root fly as a spring-only risk.
What to do: Protect brassica transplants with mesh or a collar at planting time regardless of the calendar month, not only for the first spring batch.
In Scotland: Cabbage root fly pressure is lower overall in Scotland's cooler summers (SAC/SRUC Technical Note T488), but that lowers the baseline risk across the whole season, it does not remove later generations, so summer and autumn transplants still need protection.

Risk tracks how long a crop stays in the ground and whether the edible part is the root itself, not a flat per-species rule. AHDB states that control is particularly important where the marketable part of the plant is what the maggots damage, naming root crops, sprout buttons and broccoli florets specifically, which implies lower priority for crops harvested before that damage matters. RHS's own radish growing guide draws this out directly for one crop: fast summer salad radish is unlikely to be troubled because it is harvested quickly, while slower winter and oriental radish varieties, which stay in the ground far longer, may cause problems and are worth netting.
What to do: Reserve mesh or fleece for crops that stay in the ground for weeks, such as cabbage, calabrese, swede, turnip, and slow winter or oriental radish. Fast summer salad radish and other quick-harvest salad brassicas carry genuinely lower risk and can often go without.

Wilting is one of the symptoms RHS lists for cabbage root fly, alongside poor growth and outright death of transplants, but wilting on its own is not a reliable fingerprint for this specific pest. AHDB notes that on plants with larger root systems, damage can stay hidden until harvest and even then can be hard to identify from the outside, so a wilting plant does not confirm root fly damage by sight alone. UC IPM's clubroot page, describing a completely different brassica root problem, records the same above-ground symptom set of wilting and stunting and states plainly that digging up the plant and inspecting the roots is the only way to tell root-based problems apart.
Our read Both entomological and disease sources converge on the same practical point even though they are describing different organisms: wilting tells you something is wrong with the roots, not which problem it is.
What to do: Treat wilting as a signal to dig up one affected plant and inspect the roots before treating for cabbage root fly specifically.
