“Getting rid of the ants tending a black bean aphid colony is an effective way to bring the aphids under control”

Ants really do defend black bean aphid colonies, collecting the honeydew the aphids excrete and driving off ladybird larvae and other predators that would otherwise reduce the colony, so the underlying observation behind this claim is accurate. But targeting the ants themselves is advised against: destroying a nest tends to be followed by incoming queen ants taking over the same territory, sometimes establishing even more nests than before, which can leave the aphids just as well defended.

What to do: Leave ant nests alone and put the effort into the aphids directly, hand-squashing or wiping colonies off shoot tips and pinching out badly affected growth, rather than trying to break up the ant colony first.

Official companion-planting guidance for UK gardens describes nasturtiums being grown near beans in the hope of attracting beneficial insects, without claiming a tested trap-crop effect for this aphid specifically.

Our read The trap-crop idea is plausible on paper and widely repeated, but no institutional source we checked has run or cited a trial isolating black bean aphid numbers on beans grown with versus without a nasturtium companion. Until that comparison exists, treat it as an interesting bet rather than a proven deterrent.

Black bean aphid's own life cycle backs that up: winged aphids migrate onto beans and other summer hosts by around May, which is before an autumn-sown crop has typically finished cropping, so an earlier sowing does not obviously dodge the migration window.

Our read No source we found directly compares blackfly pressure on autumn-sown versus spring-sown broad beans, so this is a plausible-sounding piece of folklore rather than a tested result. The aphid's own May migration timing argues against it working as cleanly as the claim implies.

Shoot tips are exactly where black bean aphid colonies build up first, on the soft young growth rather than tougher older stems. Removing those tips once the lowest flowers have set small pods takes out most of an existing colony in one move and redirects the plant's energy into filling pods instead of pushing more soft growth. Two separate growing organisations give the same instruction independently, timed the same way.

What to do: Check plants from around April, and once the first flower truss has set small pods, pinch out the top few centimetres of each shoot tip and dispose of anything heavily colonised rather than composting it on site.

In Scotland: Scottish springs stay cool for longer than further south, so pods often set a little later here, which pushes the pinch-out window back correspondingly rather than following an English calendar date.
