“Small, ragged holes in leaves are always a fungal or bacterial leaf disease, not an insect pest”

Round, shotgun-pellet holes on Prunus leaves such as plum and cherry are a bacterial disease that eats through leaf tissue from the inside. Capsid bugs produce a visually similar but mechanically different hole on a much wider range of plants: their feeding saliva kills a small patch of leaf tissue, and that dead patch tears out as the leaf keeps expanding around it. Both end up as a hole with a browned edge, so the two are genuinely easy to confuse from the symptom alone.

Our read The two causes are told apart by which plant has the damage and where on the plant it appears, not by the hole shape alone. Bacterial shothole is specific to Prunus (plums, cherries, ornamental cherry). Capsid damage turns up on shoot tips and flower buds of a much broader group, including fuchsia, dahlia, rose, hydrangea, gooseberries, redcurrants and sage, none of which are Prunus species.

What to do: Check the plant first: holes on a plum or cherry point to bacterial canker/shothole, while the same symptom on fuchsia, dahlia, rose, hydrangea, currants or sage points to capsid bugs. Look for distorted new growth or failed flower buds alongside the holes, since that combination is typical of capsid feeding rather than the disease.

“Spraying as soon as you notice capsid bug damage will stop the problem”

By the time the tattered leaves or aborted buds are visible, the capsid bugs responsible have typically already fed and moved on, so a reactive spray is acting after the damage is already done rather than preventing it. No chemical control for amateur gardeners is recommended for this pest at all.

Our read This is a timing problem more than a product problem: reaching for any spray, chemical or otherwise, once the symptom is visible is close to pointless here because the insect that caused it is usually long gone.

What to do: Skip reactive spraying entirely. Put the effort into prevention instead: clear dead vegetation and rough growth nearby in late winter to remove overwintering shelter, and encourage birds and ground beetles, which are named predators that help keep numbers down.

Common green capsid, the species with by far the widest host range of the group, moves freely between garden plants and nearby rough or wild vegetation such as nettles and bramble. A population sheltering in that rough growth can feed on several unrelated garden plants across a season without settling permanently on any one of them.

Our read The insect's mobility is the whole reason removing alternative hosts nearby is one of the recommended controls: a single host plant with damage is a sign of a population nearby, not a population confined to that plant.

What to do: If capsid damage turns up on one plant, check others nearby with soft new growth, especially fuchsia, dahlia, rose, hydrangea, currants and sage, rather than assuming the problem is contained. Clearing nettles, bramble or other unmanaged growth at the garden edge removes the shelter that lets a population build up before spreading.

In Scotland: Gooseberries, redcurrants and sage are common choices for a Scottish fruit or herb bed, so a capsid population established in nearby rough growth has several worthwhile targets to move onto rather than just one.

The RHS does credit debris removal as destroying overwintering sites, but only for the tarnished plant bug specifically. The capsid bugs gardeners most commonly meet, common green capsid and apple capsid, overwinter as eggs laid inside the bark of trees and shrubs, not in dead herbaceous debris, so a general autumn tidy-up does nothing to reduce them.

What to do: Autumn debris clearance is good garden hygiene generally, but don't rely on it for capsid bug control; for apple capsid specifically, choosing less-marked varieties and tolerating cosmetic damage is the RHS's actual recommendation.

For most ornamental plants this holds up: plant vigour is usually unaffected and plants recover from the leaf damage on their own. But on fruiting shrubs the same feeding targets flower buds, not just leaves, and a bud that fails to open or opens unevenly does not produce fruit. On gooseberries and redcurrants that is a direct loss of harvest, not a purely cosmetic mark.

Our read The cosmetic-only framing is true crop by crop, not universally. It holds for the ornamental hosts capsid bugs favour most, and breaks down on the fruiting shrubs where the bug feeds on the same buds that would otherwise become fruit.

What to do: Treat leaf damage on ornamentals as something to tolerate rather than chase. On gooseberries and redcurrants, watch flower buds specifically each spring, since bud failure there is the sign that actually matters for that year's crop, especially on a young bush with fewer buds to spare.
