“Parsnip canker is caused by one specific fungus”

What gardeners see and call 'canker' is a shared symptom, not a single disease. The Warwick research identified Cylindrocarpon destructans and Mycocentrospora acerina as the primary pathogens behind UK parsnip canker, with Itersonilia pastinacae playing a lesser role, meaning at least three different fungal species can produce the same orange-brown, sunken canker on the root shoulder. A 2024 peer-reviewed study narrowed the taxonomy of the Itersonilia side of that picture, but its existence doesn't overturn the wider multi-species finding; it refines one branch of it.

Our read The 2024 Journal of Fungi paper by Chappell, Barker and Clarkson found no genetic evidence for splitting Itersonilia canker isolates into multiple species, consolidating four previously proposed Itersonilia species into one. Read alongside the same author's earlier PhD work, the overall picture is: several different fungi (not one) can each cause canker-like symptoms on parsnip roots, and Itersonilia is only one line of that complex, itself now understood as a single species rather than several.

What to do: Treat canker as a symptom with several possible causes rather than one pathogen to identify and target. Cultural controls that reduce root damage and improve drainage help against the whole complex, since no single fungicide or single-gene resistance covers all of it.

“Canker-resistant parsnip varieties like Albion, Picador or Gladiator are immune to canker”

Resistant is not the same word as immune, and the breeding research behind these varieties says so directly. A University of Warwick PhD study into parsnip canker pathogens found resistance in breeding populations tied to a single QTL (a genetic region with a measurable but partial effect), describing the goal as 'quantitative resistance' rather than immunity. That is the standard shape of disease resistance in root vegetable breeding: it lowers the odds and severity of infection, it does not remove the risk.

Our read RHS names Albion, Gladiator, Picador and Viper as canker-resistant on its parsnip growing page but does not claim any variety is canker-proof. The Warwick thesis, working on the same disease, explains why: the resistance identified and bred for is polygenic and partial (quantitative), built from QTLs, not a single immunity gene.

What to do: Grow a resistant variety as one layer of defence, not the whole plan. Still avoid root damage, keep to a long rotation and choose well-drained ground, because a resistant variety in poor conditions can still canker.

“Parsnip canker is worse on acid, wet soil, so raising the soil pH by liming helps prevent it”

This claim circulates widely among gardeners, but a direct read of the RHS parsnip growing guide's pest and disease and soil sections finds no mention of soil pH, liming, drainage or wet/acid soils in connection with canker at all. Its only soil guidance for parsnips is to remove stones and loosen heavy or compacted ground so roots grow straight, which is about shape, not disease.

Our read We fetched and read the RHS page in full rather than relying on a search summary; several search-engine summaries do attribute a soil pH and liming claim to RHS, but it is not present on the page. We could not find a UK/Scottish government agency, university extension or peer-reviewed source that tests soil pH against canker incidence either. The claim may have a real basis in unpublished growing experience, but nothing in the sources we could read confirms or denies it.

What to do: Do not rely on liming as a canker control. The steps that do help are avoiding root damage, watering evenly in dry spells so roots do not split, and choosing well-drained, uncompacted ground for root health generally.

In Scotland: Scotland's naturally acid soils make this a tempting claim to believe, but tempting is not the same as tested; without a source, do not lime specifically for canker.

This is repeated on gardening forums and allotment sites, but the version we found stated online carries no citation to a research source. General sowing guidance points the other way: sow once soil reaches around 12°C, typically March to early May, and sowings made in that early to mid-spring window 'tend to do much better' overall, without linking sowing date to canker risk either way.

Our read RHS's parsnip page does not connect sowing date to canker at all; its sowing-date advice is about germination and root development, not disease. The specific 'sow later to dodge canker' claim traces to unattributed gardening advice pages, not to a source we could verify, so we cannot confirm or deny it.

What to do: Sow within the recommended window for healthy root development rather than delaying sowing on the strength of an unconfirmed canker claim; protect against root damage and keep growth even instead, which are the canker controls that are actually sourced.
