🐛 Different fungus, different fix

“Raking up and destroying fallen leaves in autumn, the way you would for apple scab, also controls blossom wilt/brown rot”

Both RHS and UC IPM describe the fungus overwintering in mummified fruit left hanging on the tree or on the ground, and in cankers on the wood — neither source mentions fallen leaves playing any part in reinfection. That's different from apple/pear scab, whose fungus does overwinter in leaf litter, which is likely where the confusion comes from.

What to do: Pick off and dispose of mummified or rotten fruit (bury at least 30cm deep, or use council green waste) and prune out cankered spurs — leaf raking is the scab move, not the blossom wilt one.

How much damage blossom wilt does in a given year comes down to the weather at flowering time rather than being a fixed severity you can predict in advance. Both a UK disease guide and a US university IPM programme describe rain and moisture during bloom as the condition that drives infection, with one giving a specific mid-70s Fahrenheit, rainy-bloom combination as the peak risk window for the related brown rot fungus on stone fruit.

Our read The two sources describe the same wet-weather-at-bloom mechanism from different angles (a UK ornamental/garden guide versus a US commercial-orchard IPM programme), which is a reasonable cross-check even though neither is Scotland-specific.

What to do: Don't judge a tree's health by one bad blossom-wilt year; a wet fortnight at flowering is enough to cause it on an otherwise fine tree. Focus effort on sanitation (removing mummified fruit and infected spurs) rather than trying to control the weather.

In Scotland: A damp cold snap right at blossom time is an ordinary feature of a Scottish spring, so this disease doesn't need an unusual year to show up here.

Removing infected spurs and blossom where it's practical to do so cuts down the amount of fungus left on the tree that would otherwise go on to infect fruit later in the season. This sits alongside removing mummified fruit as the two sanitation steps that matter most, because both are ways the fungus carries over rather than being wiped out by weather or time alone.

What to do: Cut out and burn (or bin, don't compost) obviously wilted spurs and blossom clusters as you spot them through spring, and don't leave rotted mummified fruit hanging on the tree over winter.

“Blossom wilt and brown rot are basically the same disease, just at different times of year”

Blossom wilt and brown rot are caused by the same two fungi, Monilinia laxa and M. fructigena, acting at different points in one yearly cycle rather than being two separate problems. The blossom-wilt phase happens at flowering in spring, when spores released from old mummified fruit and cankers infect the new blossom; the brown-rot phase follows later in the season when fruit itself is infected, typically through wounds, and eventually mummifies to carry the fungus through to next spring.

Our read Worth treating as one disease with two visible phases for management purposes: sanitation done at either point (removing wilted spurs in spring, or rotted fruit at any time) reduces the fungus load feeding both phases.

What to do: Don't treat blossom-time wilting and fruit-time rot as unrelated problems needing separate fixes; the same sanitation routine, removing infected material promptly rather than leaving it on the tree, addresses both.

There's a real difference between named varieties: apple 'Bramley's Seedling', 'Gala', 'Golden Delicious' and 'Fiesta' show good resistance, against 'Cox's Orange Pippin', 'James Grieve' and 'Lord Derby' among the most frequently affected. On plums, 'Jefferson' and 'Marjorie's Seedling' are resistant options.

What to do: If you're planting a new tree and blossom wilt is a concern, lean toward one of the named resistant varieties over a known-susceptible one like Cox's Orange Pippin, but don't expect resistance alone to prevent all damage in a genuinely wet spring.
