“Hanging a pheromone trap in your apple tree will control codling moth and stop maggoty fruit.”

Pheromone traps lure and catch male moths, and that count is what tells you when the flight period starts so any other treatment gets timed correctly. On a garden with one or two isolated trees the traps may mop up enough males to dent mating success, but as a stand-alone control they leave most females free to mate and lay, so fruit still gets tunnelled.

Our read Treat the trap as a monitoring tool and flight-timing calendar, not a defence. If damage is heavy, pair it with sanitation and physical barriers rather than relying on the trap alone.

What to do: Hang one trap per tree from mid-spring, check it every few days, and use the catch numbers to time other controls rather than expecting the trap itself to stop the damage.

Grease bands work because winter moth females are wingless and have to crawl up the trunk to reach the branches to lay eggs, so a sticky ring around the trunk catches them on the way up. Codling moth females fly, and they arrive in midsummer rather than climbing the bark in winter, so a trunk band never crosses their path.

What to do: Keep grease bands for winter moth and other crawling species, but plan codling moth control separately, through trunk banding for larvae, sanitation, and trap-timed treatments.

Nematodes applied to the trunk, branches and surrounding soil in September and October target the caterpillars that have already left this year's fruit and are settling in to overwinter on that particular tree, and they can reduce that local population. What they can't do is stop next year's problem outright, because they have no effect on the female moths that fly in from other gardens once the new season's flight begins.

What to do: Use an autumn nematode drench to knock back the larvae already overwintering on your own tree, but expect fresh moths from elsewhere to still turn up next summer and plan monitoring and sanitation accordingly.

“Choosing a codling-moth-resistant apple variety means you won't get maggoty fruit.”

Variety does shift the odds a little: firmer-fleshed fruit is somewhat harder for a newly hatched larva to tunnel into, and varieties that ripen early can dodge the later generation because they're picked before it builds up. Neither effect adds up to resistance, and no apple or pear variety is described as free of risk.

What to do: Pick firmer-fruited or early-ripening varieties if you're choosing a new tree, since they carry somewhat lower risk, but still monitor and manage every apple and pear rather than assuming any variety is safe on its own.

Mature larvae leave the fruit to find a sheltered crevice to spin a cocoon, and a band of corrugated cardboard tied around the trunk gives them exactly that, so checking and destroying what's caught under the band each week does remove some of the local population before it overwinters. Where sources split is on how much that actually reduces next year's damage: a Colorado State extension guide lists banding as a genuine part of a sanitation programme, while California's IPM programme now says banding controls only a small percentage of the population and no longer recommends it as a home-garden control method on its own.

Our read Both sides agree the mechanism is real, larvae do use the bands. The disagreement is about scale: with a single tree it can meaningfully add to sanitation, but it will not carry the job alone once a garden has more than a couple of infested trees or neighbours' trees nearby.

What to do: Band trunks by early summer, check weekly, and destroy anything sheltering under the cardboard, but treat it as one layer alongside picking up windfalls, not a fix on its own.

“Maggoty windfall apples can go straight on the compost heap without spreading codling moth.”

A codling moth larva usually leaves the fruit before it finishes rotting down, crawls off to a sheltered spot, and spins a cocoon there for winter, and an ordinary garden heap gives it plenty of cold spots to do that in rather than killing it. A university extension answer service put the practical threshold at compost that reliably holds above 145F (63C) throughout, which most passive garden bins never reach, and suggested chopping or fully drying windfalls first as a lower-effort alternative.

Our read Composting isn't automatically unsafe, but a cool, slow heap doesn't disinfect infested fruit the way people often assume.

What to do: Collect windfalls promptly through the season rather than letting them sit, and either bin them, bury them well away from the tree, or chop them small before adding to a heap that doesn't reliably heat right through.
