“Planting a 'scab-resistant' variety means you won't get scab”

Resistance is real but partial, not a guarantee. No commercially available variety completely resists common scab, only some, such as Superior, Norland and Onaway, are less susceptible than others like Denali or Kennebec. RHS's own list of resistant varieties (Accent, Arran Pilot, Golden Wonder and others for common scab) is framed the same way, as varieties that show resistance rather than immunity.

What to do: Treat a resistant variety as one useful layer alongside clean seed, an unlimed bed and consistent watering during tuber formation, not a substitute for any of them. In a bed with a known scab history, resistance alone will not keep the crop clean.

“Keeping soil moist while tubers are forming matters more for preventing scab than soil pH does”

Every institutional source treats moisture and pH as two separate levers on the same disease rather than one mattering more than the other, so ranking them against each other does not hold up. RHS, Cornell and a University of Maine extension bulletin all identify dry soil during the two to six week window after tuber initiation as the specific trigger that lets common scab take hold, with RHS giving a concrete watering target of 20 litres per square metre over 4 weeks starting 2-3 weeks after emergence. But the same three sources also give pH thresholds and liming advice in the same breath, treating it as an equally real, independently useful control rather than a secondary factor.

Our read The moisture point is the newer, less widely known half of this myth and worth surfacing on its own: a gardener who avoids lime but lets the bed dry out during tuber set is only doing half the job. But it is not a case of one factor being the 'real' cause and the other a red herring; the sources treat both as levers worth pulling.

What to do: Do both: keep the bed unlimed and, separately, water consistently for about 4 weeks starting 2-3 weeks after shoots emerge, since that window is when dry soil specifically lets the bacteria infect the forming tubers.

“Digging plenty of organic matter or manure into the potato bed helps keep scab away”

The advice actually points in opposite directions depending on which kind of organic matter is meant. RHS recommends increasing organic matter levels specifically to improve the soil's water retention, which helps prevent the dry conditions that trigger scab. But Cornell's factsheet warns that soils with high organic matter levels are favourable to scab infection and that applying manure specifically can increase it, and the University of Alaska Fairbanks extension separately lists avoiding an overabundance of soil organic matter as a management practice.

Our read The RHS advice is about moisture retention generically, not about manure specifically, while the two organisms most cited by Cornell and UAF single out manure and high organic matter loads as raising risk rather than lowering it. Manure also tends to be alkaline, working against the separate advice to avoid liming. The two are not really the same claim, and conflating 'add organic matter' with 'add manure' is where this myth goes wrong.

What to do: Use well-rotted, low-pH organic matter such as leaf mould or garden compost to help the soil hold moisture, but avoid fresh manure on ground destined for potatoes, since it tends to raise both organic matter load and soil pH at once, the two factors sources disagree over and warn about respectively.

“Liming your soil (or growing potatoes after a limed brassica bed) causes potato scab”

Common scab is worse in alkaline soil, and lime is exactly what pushes soil pH up, so this old allotment rule holds. Lime applied for club root in brassicas will predispose the following potato crop to scab, so liming should come after potatoes in the rotation rather than before. Two US university extension services confirm the same pH mechanism: Cornell puts the safe threshold at pH 5.2 or below, and Purdue names excessive liming, manure and wood ash specifically as amendments to avoid because they raise pH into the 5.5-7.5 range where scab worsens.

Our read It is more accurate to say alkaline soil favours scab than that lime itself is a direct trigger, since the bacteria are already present in most soil regardless of pH. But for a gardener deciding what to spread before a potato crop, the practical rule and the belief behind it line up.

What to do: Skip lime on ground destined for potatoes this year. If a bed needs liming for a follow-on brassica crop, do it after lifting the potatoes, not before planting them.

“Scabby potatoes are still safe to eat, especially once peeled”

This is correct, and it applies even without peeling. Both RHS and the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service describe common scab damage as superficial, affecting only the skin and eating quality rather than the flesh underneath, and UAF states plainly that scabby potatoes are safe to eat. Peeling removes the rough patches for appearance's sake, not because the tuber underneath is unsafe.

What to do: Peel away the rough patches if the look bothers you, but there is no safety reason to discard a scabby potato, mild or otherwise. Severely cracked or rotting tubers should still be composted rather than eaten, but that is a rot issue, not a scab-specific one.
