The fly's dedicated pest guidance names parsnip, celeriac, parsley and lovage alongside celery as hosts damaged in the same way, by the same larvae mining between the leaf surfaces. A bed that mixes any of these crops, or sits near common hogweed, spreads the risk across more than one vegetable rather than confining it to celery.

Our read The name is misleading on its own: it points at one crop when the pest's actual host range in cultivation is at least five plants, four of them common allotment vegetables and herbs.

What to do: Treat parsnip, celeriac, parsley and lovage as being at the same risk as celery, and rotate all of them together rather than assuming only the celery bed needs mesh.

In Scotland: Common hogweed grows on roadsides and rough verges across most of Scotland and is a wild host, so a bed backing onto a hedge or verge can keep reinfesting itself no matter how the cultivated hosts are rotated.

There are at least two generations in a single season, running from early May into autumn, and the second generation is typically more numerous than the first. A clear leaf in July is no guarantee the plant stays clear into September, since a fresh batch of eggs can start a second round of mining on the same plant.

Mesh works by stopping females laying eggs on the foliage in the first place, so it has to be in place before egg-laying starts, not added after mines are already visible on the leaves. Fitted late over soil that already holds overwintering pupae, mesh can trap newly emerged adults inside with the crop instead of keeping them out, which is worse than no mesh at all.

Our read This is why crop rotation has to run alongside mesh rather than mesh alone: without it, mesh fitted over the same ground each year risks sealing flies in with the plants they're meant to be kept off.
