“Broad bean rust will jump to nearby pea plants and infect them too.”

The fungus is capable of attacking broad beans, peas, and other related legumes in principle, but in the UK it is only of practical importance on broad beans. Peas grown alongside an infected bean crop are not treated as being at meaningful risk from it here.

Our read Peas have their own separate rust-causing organism worth watching for, so a pea crop next to rust-hit broad beans doesn't need extra vigilance specifically because of this fungus.

What to do: Keep managing broad bean rust on the bean bed itself through airflow and sanitation; there is no need to isolate a nearby pea crop or treat it as a spread risk from this particular disease.

Significant levels of this rust are expected from mid-summer onward, not in spring. Earlier in the season the fungus is present at most in small amounts, well before it has built up into anything worth acting on.

What to do: Save close leaf inspections for midsummer through the rest of the season rather than spring, and focus early-season energy on airflow and spacing instead.

“Rotating broad beans to a new part of the plot each year is enough on its own to stop rust coming back.”

The fungus overwinters as resting spores in crop debris and on contaminated seed, which is exactly the local carryover route that moving beds and using clean seed would interrupt. But a 2023 peer-reviewed field trial on this same species found that simply growing beans next to a different legume, peas, gave no significant reduction in rust severity, while growing them next to barley did cut it by about a fifth, showing that diversifying the surrounding planting doesn't automatically help and the airborne spread this fungus is also capable of isn't addressed by rotation at all.

Our read Rotation plus destroying old debris plausibly reduces the amount of local, home-grown infection carried over from one year to the next, but it can't stop fresh airborne spores blowing in from elsewhere, so treating rotation alone as sufficient overstates what it does.

What to do: Rotate broad beans onto fresh ground and use clean seed as one part of a routine, but keep pairing it with the wider-spacing and prompt-sanitation habits already worth following for this disease rather than relying on rotation by itself.

The diagnostic description of this disease covers small, dusty, dark brown spots surrounded by a pale yellow halo on leaves and stems, with no mention of pustules forming on the pods themselves. No institutional source addresses food safety for beans harvested from an infected plant either way, so there is nothing to confirm or deny the claim directly.

Our read Because the fungus is described as a leaf-and-stem infection rather than a pod one, a plant showing rust is unlikely to have visibly affected beans at all. Absence of a food-safety statement is not the same as a clean bill of health, so this stays unproven rather than busted.

What to do: Shell and inspect the beans as normal; if the pods themselves are clean, cook and eat them as usual, and compost or bin only the rust-marked leaves and stems.
