Damping off is a shared name for the collapse pattern, not a single organism. It is caused by several different soil-borne fungi and water moulds acting individually or together, commonly Pythium, Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia and Fusarium. That matters practically because there is no single pathogen to target and, as a result, no fungicide gardeners can buy for it: control works by making conditions hostile to all of them at once rather than by treating one culprit.
What to do: Do not go looking for one cause when a batch of seedlings collapses. Attack the shared conditions instead: sow thinly, keep air moving, water with restraint, and start with fresh compost and clean pots.

Commercial compost is described as usually free of damping-off organisms, not guaranteed sterile, and that qualifier matters because the pots and trays themselves are a separate route for infection regardless of what the compost is like. Institutional advice treats clean compost and clean containers as two separate jobs, recommending both fresh growing medium and disinfected pots, trays and flats rather than treating one as a substitute for the other.
What to do: Buy fresh compost for seed sowing, but still wash and, ideally, disinfect pots and trays that have been used before rather than assuming new compost covers for old containers.

A peer-reviewed trial found that chamomile flower extract measurably reduced growth of Pythium ultimum, one of the organisms grouped under damping off, in laboratory dishes, and worked best combined with a biocontrol fungus rather than alone. That is a genuine result, but it used a prepared flower extract at a set concentration on agar plates, not a cup of tea poured over compost, and it was never tested on live seedlings. Other screenings of aqueous plant extracts against damping-off fungi have found weaker or inconsistent results for chamomile specifically, which is why this sits as disputed rather than settled either way.
What to do: A splash of cooled chamomile tea on seed trays is low-risk and may do some good, but do not treat it as a replacement for thin sowing, good ventilation and clean pots and compost, which have the stronger backing.

The risk is real but conditional rather than automatic. Rainwater itself is not the problem: an open water butt collecting leaves, debris and standing organic matter can become a source of damping-off pathogens, and irrigation with pond water or runoff that has touched contaminated soil is specifically flagged as risky. A covered butt kept free of debris avoids that route. The blanket version of the claim, that any water butt is unsafe for seedlings, overstates a risk that mains water simply removes but a clean, covered butt largely avoids too.
What to do: Keep the water butt lid on and skip using it for the most vulnerable seed trays if in doubt, but a covered butt does not need to be abandoned for the rest of the garden.
In Scotland: Water-butt collection is common practice here and worth keeping for most watering. The exception, seedlings under cover in late winter and early spring, is exactly the vulnerable window, so mains water for trays specifically is the sensible compromise rather than giving up rainwater collection altogether.

Cinnamon bark does contain compounds with real antifungal activity in lab conditions, but the closest peer-reviewed test used a concentrated liquid extract against a grain-blight fungus unrelated to damping off, not dry powder against Pythium or Rhizoctonia. Even at its strongest concentration the extract only slowed fungal growth rather than killing it, and the paper's own authors called for further testing before any practical use. Dusting dry powder on a seed tray is a different application entirely, and no institutional trial of that specific method against damping off pathogens exists.
Our read Growers water cinnamon-dusted trays as normal, which turns the powder into a weak, unmeasured infusion in the compost. Nobody has tested whether that produces enough of the active compounds to matter, so treat it as an unproven add-on rather than a substitute for hygiene and airflow.
What to do: Do not rely on cinnamon in place of the measures with actual evidence behind them: thin sowing, ventilation, restrained watering and clean pots. If used at all, treat it as a low-risk extra, not a fungicide.
