The magnesium/iron mechanism, and why it matters more than the colour

Magnesium can be relocated inside the plant, so when it's short, the plant pulls it from older leaves to protect new growth; the damage shows up as older leaves turning brown with dead patches and dropping early. Iron can't be relocated once it's built into leaf tissue, so a shortage only shows up in whatever's growing now, the youngest leaves come in yellow while the oldest leaves stay green. Both deficiencies produce the same headline symptom, interveinal yellowing with the veins themselves staying green, which is exactly why they get confused, and feeding Epsom salts to a plant with an iron problem (or vice versa) won't help, because the two are opposite failures of a similar-looking symptom.

Other pairs worth flagging

Nitrogen and potassium deficiency both start on older leaves and both cause yellowing, but potassium adds browning that starts specifically at the leaf margins, while nitrogen's yellowing is more general across the whole leaf and comes with distinctly spindly, stunted growth. Phosphorus deficiency's purple discolouration is the most distinctive symptom in the group, but it's mostly seen in young seedlings rather than mature plants, so a purple-tinged adult plant is more likely something else. Containers and raised beds change this picture regardless of native soil type. That pattern (interveinal yellowing with reddish-brown tints, on older leaves) matches magnesium deficiency. Epsom salts, either watered in or used as a foliar spray, is the standard fix.

Why are my newest leaves the yellow ones, while the old leaves look fine?
