A caveat: sometimes there's no glut at all

A gooseberry glut doesn't always materialise, because gooseberry sawfly can get there first. The RHS describes the caterpillar-like larvae of several sawfly species, active in overlapping generations from April through September, as capable of rapidly devouring a bush's foliage.
