Choose the right wood
Select strong, healthy shoots from the current year's growth, fully ripened rather than soft, woody enough to feel firm and not bend easily, but still pliable, not old, grey, deeply cracked wood from previous seasons. Roughly pencil thickness is the usual target, with plump, undamaged buds along its length and no sign of pest or disease.
Cut to length, the right way up
Remove any soft, unripened growth from the tip, then cut the remaining wood into sections following the lengths in the table above. Pick a sheltered, well-drained spot
