If: Small or urban garden, easy thornless handling
Buckingham
Bred and sold specifically for thornless handling, also marketed as Buckingham Thornless, and stays a more compact 1.5-2.5m spread against the standard variety's 2.5-4m, which matters if space is tight. The cost is real: H5 rather than H7, two full hardiness bands down, so it suits a small, sheltered garden where guaranteed thornless handling matters more than extra cold tolerance.
If: Exposed, cold, or upland site or Not sure, just give me the safest all-round choice
Standard tayberryAGM
The only one of the three rated H7, hardy below -20C, a rating few UK winters will ever properly test, and the only one to carry the AGM. Its canes are usually thornless, which softens the usual spiny original framing, though usually leaves room for occasional thorned growth. It is the strongest overall pick for most Scottish gardens.
If: Maximum yield and flavour, sheltered site
Medana
The outlier of the three for cane character: a slightly thorned tayberry, the only one with any real prickle to work around. In return it is rated for large, juicy, aromatic fruit and is the one most consistently singled out for flavour intensity. It shares Buckingham's H5 rating, so it wants a sheltered site rather than the standard variety's exceptional cold tolerance.
