RHS treats it as a problem worth actively reducing, with pruning, thinning and site selection as the response. Pacific Northwest Extension calls the underlying process normal abscission and states no cultural control is needed. Thin fruit while fruitlets are still under 5mm across
Reducing the number of fruitlets a tree is trying to support works against the crop-load side of the problem, giving the fruit that remains a better share of the tree's resources.
Use a warm, sheltered, sunny spot — a light-coloured wall or path nearby can help too
Giving the tree the warmest, best-lit position available works against the low-temperature and low-light triggers named above. A sunny wall or a light-reflecting surface nearby adds a small amount of extra warmth and light on top of the site's own conditions.
